The Institute for Sports Sciences

Established in 2013, the Institute for Sports Sciences (ISS) is a collaboration among Cedars-Sinai and two orthopedic and sports medicine groups: the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic and the Santa Monica Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Group. In addition, Sovereign Healthcare, a privately-held healthcare management company based in Southern California, plays an integral role as a founding partner of ISS, continuing to provide management resources and executive leadership.

The two prominent physician groups are widely known for their roles in the care of professional sports teams and elite athletes from around the world, in providing excellence in orthopedic care for patients throughout the region, and in significant contributions to innovations within sports medicine, research, and educating orthopedic and sports medicine surgeons of the future through their fellowship programs. The collaboration through the Institute of Sports Sciences brings these groups together with the internationally recognized medical staff and researchers at Cedars-Sinai, and provides exciting opportunities for leadership and advancements within the field of orthopedics and sports medicine.

ISS functions as a management services organization that coordinates the resources of the organizations involved, ensuring that physician practices, outpatient surgery centers, research activities, training and education efforts, and other initiatives benefit from the strengths that each partner can contribute and that each of these pursuits is executed at the highest level.

Institute for Sports Sciences has plans for significant growth and expects to work with additional physicians, physician groups and surgery centers, assisting other leading orthopedic and sports medicine provider’s benefit from the resources that ISS and its partners can offer. This growth will expand ISS’s geographic footprint and improve patient access to high-quality care.
